Germany has decided to extend its internal border controls for another six months, keeping them in place until September 15, 2025. The current checks, which were set to expire on March 15, were first introduced in September 2024 to tackle irregular migration and cross-border crime.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that these measures have been effective in stopping people smugglers and preventing illegal activities. Since their introduction, 80,000 irregular entries have been detected, 1,900 smugglers arrested, and 47,000 people denied entry due to missing documents.
While the controls aim to minimize disruption for travelers, occasional delays may still occur. Germany assures that the measures comply with EU laws and will continue in coordination with neighboring countries.
