Cyprus aims to join the Schengen Zone by the end of 2025, according to President Nikos Christodoulides. He emphasized that resolving technical issues and finalizing accession details will help boost tourism, a vital part of the economy. Since 2004, Cyprus has been a member of the EU but remains outside the passport-free Schengen Zone. Currently, Cyprus and Ireland are the only EU countries outside the Schengen Area. Romania and Bulgaria officially joined in January 2025, bringing the total number of member states to 29. The evaluation process to assess its readiness is still ongoing.

In related news, Cyprus is also close to joining the US Visa Waiver Program, which will allow its citizens to travel to the US without visas for short-term visits. A US delegation is expected to visit soon to finalize the process. Cyprus continues to work on lowering visa rejection rates to meet the necessary criteria, with government officials optimistic about achieving this goal.

These developments are expected to enhance tourism, strengthen international ties, and provide Cypriots with greater travel freedom.
