The European Union has suspended visa-free travel for Georgian diplomats and officials. Once the decision takes effect, they will need a visa to enter the EU and will no longer benefit from faster processing, reduced fees, or fewer documentation requirements.
Who Is Affected?
– Georgian government officials, parliament members, and top court judges.
– Members of Georgian delegations attending official EU events.
– Holders of Georgian diplomatic passports.
Ordinary Georgian passport holders can still travel visa-free for short stays.
Reason for the Suspension
The EU made this decision in response to Georgia’s new laws on foreign influence and family values, which it believes undermine democratic principles and human rights. The EU argues that officials representing a government that disregards these values should not receive preferential travel treatment.
